Why is Rudd popular right now?

Kevin Rudd has been replaced as Prime Minister of Australia by Julia Gillard, his Deputy PM. His leadership ended on 24 June at a Labor caucus where he did not run in the leadership ballot he called, leaving the position uncontested to Gillard, and her new Deputy PM, Treasurer Wayne Swan.
